1. a note from my better half

PKS here with my first (and probably last - ed.) blog post.

though you may have learned a bit about me already, what you probably don’t know is that i love the new york football giants. after being met with some initial resistance…

(i said hell no - ed.)

…. i was able to convince KES using my quick wit, winning personality and a tantrum any 5 year-old would be proud of. she relented. with that, here are a few reasons why you should be cheering for big blue this super bowl sunday:

    1.

the giants were founded in 1925 by tim mara. he purchased the rights to the franchise for $500 having never seen a football game.

    2.

their legal name is the “new york football giants.” they gave themselves this name to distinguish themselves from the baseball team of the same name (now the san fransisco giants).

(wait, i don’t see why this is a reason? - ed.)

    3.

every single NFL football is named “the duke” after the late giants owner wellington mara. the nickname was given to him by the players when he was just a child.

    4.

during pretty much any NFL game, you’ll see the QB, backup QB and offensive coordinator looking at a clipboard between plays. what they’re generally looking at are photographs of the last few plays. it helps them to understand defensive schemes, etc, etc.

wellington invented this practice. he would take polaroid photos from the upper deck, attach them to a balloon and drop them to the sidelines.

(ok, fair enough. that’s pretty cool - ed.)

    5.

giants fans invented the very well known, oft chanted “DE-FENSE” cheer.

    6.

the image above is one of the most famous pictures in NFL history. it was taken during the 1958 championship game between the g-men and the baltimore (now indy) colts - an event known as “the greatest game ever played.” it was the 1st championship match to go into overtime and, as a result, spilled over into prime time TV - just as most americans were tuning in for their favorite shows. this moment is credited with the explosive popularity of the NFL since.

    7.

the 1986 team invented the gatorade shower. that year, the players dumped gatorade on head coach bill parcells after each of their 17 victories (including the super bowl). though dan hampton of the chicago bears claims to have invented it in 1984, screw the bears. and, speaking of the bears, OMG did you hear that jay and that-chick-from-the hills’ baby was unplanned?!

    8.

    the patriots are filthy cheaters.

    9.

rooney mara is the duke’s granddaughter.

    10.

    (mildly related - ed.)

if you’re looking for something amazing to make on sunday, check out this recipe for burgers smothered in a caramelized onion, mushroom and bleu cheese sauce. they are electric.

    (they are - ed.)
